I Want to Rock Like This Woman

This song will from now on be our house anthem. If you want to get in, you have to sing it at the door :-) It would also make a great lullaby, somehow.

Thanks to Katharine for turning me on to this rockin' woman, Malvina Reynolds. She reminds me a little of my Grammy, except she has a guitar.....and says the word "sex"......

A Little Late Night Awesomeness...

because I love the subway...courtesy of vintage Sesame Street:

The lyrics rock! This would never make it on a kids' show today:

"You could lose your purse
Or you might lose something worse
On the subway.....SUBWAY!"

Seriously......

At the Day's End

Like many, I adore the experience of movies. Lately Mr. S. and I haven't been able to get out to see many, nor have we had time to watch DVD's, but there's always soundtracks. I love when you peel the layers of certain movies and sometimes, like a pomegranate, the music gets everywhere. Right now, at the end of a day that started out a bit shaky but ended up really wonderful with good friends visiting and good food and lots of laughing and stories, Safiya fell asleep in my arms, as she often does, to the music of Amelie. I wish I could figure out how to stream it for you, because it's some of my favourite music.

If you have it, please join us - it's a perfect end for today...

Chelsea Morning

Houses are imbued with the layers of meaning that their occupants bring to them, past and present, and every house for me seems to have its own song. When I first stepped in this house, I knew Joni Mitchell's "Chelsea Morning" had to be the first song I heard here. Of course, I couldn't find it amongst all of the stuff that follows you on a move, and we subsequently discovered that it had been lost, and so other songs have been heard here since (most often the Raconteurs "Steady as She Goes": Safiya's most favourite song in the whole wide world), but it's been waiting, patiently, expectantly.

This evening there's some bright and sunshine music playing in around the window ledges and chairs...I think the house is smiling.

Listening to Jefferson Airplane and Cleaning the Fridge

Way back when my husband, Mr. S, brought home a Jefferson Airplane CD, I said "Jefferson Airplane?...."

Oh, yes, Jefferson Airplane. And cleaning out the fridge. And dreaming about my new sewing machine, which I tried out today...and maybe a little bit of Sufjan Stevens later on. It's a good day.
